Our certified instructors encourage students to live up to the ideals of Don Jitsu Ryu by embracing a holistic standard of living, promoting health and wellness, and the appropriate application of the system.
All instructors certified in Don Jitsu Ryu apply this to each training session in keeping with Purple Dragon’s formidable reputation.

Having visited six out of seven continents and over 70 countries, Purple Dragon’s Don Jitsu Ryu, led by founder Don Jacob, has inspired hundreds of thousands of martial arts enthusiasts, workshops, lectures, presentations, tournaments, and grading events. Leaving a positive, lasting impression of the organization and the countries where our respective dojos are based.
Since opening its doors for the first time in 1970, Purple Dragon and Don Jitsu Ryu have spread rapidly, and thousands of members now practice the all-inclusive system in 50-plus dojos located in the Caribbean, Canada, the United States, and Europe. It is undisputedly the single largest private martial arts organization in the Caribbean, having dominated the region in terms of membership and high standards for over 30 years.
In addition to creating and evolving Don Jitsu Ryu, Don Jacob has also inspired readers worldwide and authored several books. That illustrates his combat techniques, guides to self-defense, tournament protocol, the organization’s all-encompassing value system, and many other critical themes. Flesh & Bone, one of Purple Dragon’s best-selling publications, is an incredibly useful resource to learn the steps required to obtain the highest degrees within the system.

WHY IS DON JITSU RYU RIGHT FOR YOU?
Purple Dragon is recognized as a martial arts leader, has transformed thousands of lives, from young children to adults, through character development. Don Jitsu Ryu instructors trained to see to the needs of the individual student, which has been proven in many cases to boost the member’s confidence, self-worth, integrity, discipline, and other attributes to a healthy, prosperous lifestyle.
When coached, all students apply themselves at school, work, and leisure within all Purple Dragon dojos walls. Patience and self-control are other qualities instructors embed in the minds of their charges, along with respect, and humility to help them deal with difficult social situations, as well as figures of authority.

Professor Don Jacob
PROFESSOR DON JACOB, Founder and Creator of the Purple Dragon Don Jitsu Ryu System®, an institution founded in 1970. He was born on a small twin island of Trinidad & Tobago and has studied martial arts for over five decades but is now a US citizen. He holds a 9th Degree Black Belt and the title (Hanshi) Grandmaster or Professor.
In his prime, he has competed in many parts of the world, traveled to over 70 countries, and is a recognized international instructor.
His students compete in major tournaments in Fighting, Forms, Self Defense, Weaponry, and Demonstrations. Professor Jacob has appeared on National and International television on several of the world’s most influential channels including ABC’s Wide World of Sports (USA) and Trans World Sports (UK).
He has enjoyed being featured in many Sports Martial Arts and Cultural magazines, such as NBL Sport Karate International and Black Diaspora magazine (US). His presence on the cover of the British magazine Oriental Arts – Karate of August 1980 was an achievement that will long be remembered.
He has done videos and starred in leading roles. Some of these are: Enter the Purple Dragon, Battle of the Pro-Am Champions, Australian Tour 1, 2, 3, and Don Jacob’s Fighting Techniques, among many others.
He has authored several books – the most outstanding High Impact Jiu-Jitsu, Purple Dragon Don Jitsu Ryu System Manuals 1 & 2, Fighting Man’s Bible, Purple Dragon Marketing Warfare, Rape Prevention for Women, The Purple Dragon Rules of Martial Arts Competition Handbook, Don Jitsu Ryu: Flesh and Bone, Don Jitsu Forms 1, 2 and Techniques.
He has benefited from being featured in The Official History of Karate in America (The Golden Age 1968-1986) and The Black Heroes of Martial Arts and thousands of newspaper articles, talk shows, and live appearances across the globe.
Professor Jacob was one of three Purple Dragon black belts to be made an Honorary Citizen of Alameda, California in 1984, and was given the keys to Honolulu, Hawaii, and Melbourne, Australia.
He was honored as “The Unsung Hero” by the U.N.C. The government came into power in 1995. Over two hundred standing ovations for his work have not spoiled him.
The testimonials he has received and the commendations that have come are witnesses to the fact that he is indisputably one of the world’s most decorated athlete and is ranked among the top performers and lecturers in the world.
He has not been overshadowed by all of his acclaims even though he genuinely relished the ones where he received standing ovations from a full audience at Madison Square Gardens in New York City, NY; the Canadian National Exhibition, Seminars in London, England, and the Middle East.
Professor Don Jacob was inducted into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio USA in 1991. He was inducted into the World Head of Family Sokeship Council Hall of Fame on May 23 and 24, 2008 in San Antonio, Texas USA.
In the same year, he was inducted in the Kuroshi-DO Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia USA.
In 2010, Professor Don Jacob became the first and only martial artist in Trinidad and Tobago to receive one of the nation’s highest citizens awards – the Humming Bird Gold Medal – presented to him by the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago at the country’s Independence Day celebration on August 31st at the Queen’s Hall Auditorium.
As a result of receiving Trinidad’s highest citizen award, Professor Jacob is a member of “The Distinguished Society of Trinidad and Tobago” Trinidad’s elite society for outstanding members in Trinidad.
On May 10th, 2016, Professor was once again recognized for his contributions to society and humanitarian works by the city of Newark, NJ and received a commendation from the Newark City Council.

Shihan Adrian Browne – 6th Dan Black Belt
Shihan Adrian has been a member of the Purple Dragon team Since 1995 under Professor Don Jacob and Sensei Wendell Small and currently operates Purple Dragon North York Dojo in Ontario, Canada.
He has travelled with the Purple Dragon team to Tobago, Tortola, Grenada, and the USA.
Shihan Adrian is very passionate about teaching and serving the community. His dedication to his students, ranging from kids to adults, to be more Disciplined, Confident, to Develop their Self-worth and how to become Positive human beings in this World.
